Larry is incorrect.  The message you received results from not having any
* PW= line at all (if you're using a LISTSERV version prior to 1.8c).

Would suggest you add a password of any random garbage, store the list back,
and then add and use a personal password to manage the list.  (For example,
add

* PW = sfrpxsdf

then add a personal LISTSERV password for yourself with the PW ADD command
if you haven't already done so.
