My problem is the later

After you retrieve copies of the individual messages, you can use a simple
script to generate a list of message files for a given month, create a new
monthly log file, then add the individual messages to the file with the
required separator at the beginning of each message.

I do not know how to write these simple scripts. How do you get the
separator at the beginning of each message?

You can upgrade to 1.8e without implementing the web interface, however, the
list management, list moderation, and site management features in the 1.8e
web interface are invaluable, even if you decide that you do not want to
make any of your list archives web-accessible. If you want to make list
archives web-accessible, you must consolidate the separate message archives
into weekly or monthly archives.

After you retrieve copies of the individual messages, you can use a simple
script to generate a list of message files for a given month, create a new
monthly log file, then add the individual messages to the file with the
required separator at the beginning of each message.
