This is the relevant text, for the subscription BY-OWNER, from file
DEFAULT MAILTPL (you can GET it from your LISTSERV):
 
>>> SUB_OWNER Message sent to user trying SUBSCRIBE on by-owner list
Your request to join the &LISTNAME list has been forwarded to the list
owner for approval. If you have any question about the list, you can
reach the list owner at &OWNER.
 
You can modify it (leaving intact the '>>> SUB_OWNER' heading, deleting
everything you don't want customize (other messages)), and PUT your
version in a file called your_list MAILTPL, properly cataloged in
your_list FILELIST. Potential subscribers will automatically receive
your text, instead of the standard one.
