Another method of stopping (or at least slowing down) advertizing posts
might be to set your list Send= Private. Then they'd have to go to the
trouble of subscribing before they could post, at least. I shudder at
the thought of moderating a list (and setting Send= Private would kill
the redistribution lists).
Obviously this fellow hasn't bothered to research the Internet as much
as he claims to have done or he'd know about the non-commercial aspect.
(Ah, hell--why be naive? The guy is trying to make a fast buck. :)
I might note that I have a subscriber from one of the big 3rd-party
manual houses on my ACCESS-L list, and now and then he gives us some
info on what they are working on...but I don't consider that commercial
plugging because he is an active member of the list and is a big help
to a lot of the other subscribers. If all he ever did was post notices
about the books his house is publishing, that would be another story.
I will be changing my list charters immediately to reflect the non-
commercial character of my lists--that does make sense. Thanks, Wes,
for that idea--and thanks, Doug, for posting the advert and giving us
a bit of warning.
