Look around in the Templates section of your list administration web
interface.  You may be most interested in the Welcome message (which is
a static file, no variables or substitutions available), or the
"Standard message to new subscribers $signup" template which allows for
limited personalizing by substitutions.

But it all depends on just what you really mean by "custom" though . .
. if you want something unique for each list - no problem.  If you want
something really individualized for particular subscribers (beyond their
email address substituted here and there), maybe not.
