I was curious if anyone on the list has an opinion about my auto delete
dilemma.

Thanks,
Frank FitzMaurice

Subject: LISTSERV 1.8d & auto deletion

I was wondering if someone at L-Soft can answer some questions I have about
auto deleting. At dtic.mil we have your 1.8d software. I manage a small
announcement list, 413 subscribed currently. Announcements are usually no
more frequent than once a month. I believe we have several lists that meet
this profile at DTIC. Currently the list is setup with:
Auto-Delete= Yes,Semi-Auto,Delay(4), Max(100)

However, I am concerned that this setting will not delete any bounced mail.
As I understand the auto delete feature, if errors are recorded for four
straight days or 100 errors are received (as the parameters are set above),
whichever occurs first, the user is deleted. Otherwise, no action is taken.
If this is correct, please correct me if it is not, the feature is not
useful to my type of list since our postings are so infrequent. I was
thinking that passive or active probing may be the better option for us. I
like what I have read about passive probing except for the fact that only a
percentage of subscribers are probed. I can't find anywhere in your
documentation about how the actual percentage is determined and why can't
all subscribers be probed?? I am assuming that passive probing works the
same way as active probing once the messages have been sent, i.e. if the
message goes through, no action; if it bounces, another probe is sent based
on the data in the Auto-Delete Keyword. Please correct me if this is not
correct.

Please let me know what you think. I have been wondering how to manage
bounces on infrequent lists for a couple of years now. You have a great
product but sometimes the documentation is hard to understand.

Thanks!
