Thanks for your note.  Someone here (who obviously is NOT in the know) told
me that a 1 byte file would work. I created the 1 byte file on the VM system
with xedit and then used a utility (LSVPUT) to get it to listserv.  Needless
to say, this shortcut does not work.  When I switched to sending the empty
files via mail with the VM mailer, I was able to delete the files.  Last
time I had this problem the systems people never did figure it out.  They
finally just deleted the files manually for me.  Ah well, live and learn.
