Johan Ingles <[log in to unmask]> asked:
> tell me how to get off this list

And several listowners responded along these lines:
> I gotta say, this is one of my biggest pet peeves about list
> administration. No one ever saves the welcoming instructions

> I'll be honest, my subscribers are not smart enough to
> unsubscribe themselves. I just unsubscribe them

> I'd be interested in hearing what other list owners do.

Well, like most of you, I have the instructions on the web to supplement
the welcome message, plus a DIGEST-H at the top of every digest (I haven't
resorted to bottom banners, *yet*.) Still the requests come. Most of my
subscribers are pretty sharp and only ask me for help when their email
address changes, but there are always a few.... I use a shareware product
(TypeIt4Me) so all I have to do is reply and type "pmunsub" and what I
typed is replaced by the full instructions.

Mr. Ingles' request shows how hard it is to write filters to trap
"commands." I don't think Eric can plan for every possible variation on
unsubscribe, e.g.: stop sending me mail, unscribe [sic], get me off, etc.

But I thought listserv would trap any valid listserv command until someone
accidentally posted a SEARCH command to my list. Went right out to all
subscribers....
