Did you use the GET listname (HEADER command to obtain the header or are
you just using a local copy?  If you used the GET command then the message
you received from LISTSERV would already have a preformed firstline:

PUT listname LIST PW=xxxxxxxx
* (header lines follow here)

In this case you modify the header, remove the xxxxx and put in your
password and send back to LISTSERV.  (Be sure your 'helpful' mail pgm has
not put '>' quoting symbols in front of the header lines, this will not
work.)

If you are working from a local copy of the header (on your own computer)
it may not have the necessary PUT command line.
