Fair enough. If this and quality issues are so important to
a list, the owner can screen all subscription requests and terminate
the subscription of anyone violating the list charter. For that matter,
each new subscriber could be asked to swear on a virtual copy
of The Matrix to follow the guidelines;)

usenet newsgroups allow people to read messages more conveniently
than having traffic dumped into their readers. This can be important
esp for students who may lack adequate disk space, and on some systems
mail is dumped into their account space automatically....
 
It would seem to me that a list which is so deeply concerned with
ownership should not gateway to usenet, as the ethos are different
there; I see the need for both kinds of traffic.
