RFC 3463 (obsoletes RFC 1893) is the current standard.

Just remember, that some mail servers have been purposely
instructed/configured to 'lie' and give incorrect/inaccurate error codes in
some cases, especially certain 5.x.y codes.  They want you to remove the
address from any mailing lists.
