I think what you can definitely say is that each list has its own criteria.
What works for one won't work for another.  Hey, we have public lists that
farmers with 2400baud modems and 286s subscribe to, and private lists where
we know everyone in DPI has Windows 95 and Outlook.  We can't even set a
standard of whether HTML is acceptable and be _internally_ consistent!  Why
should anyone else be expected to conform to another's preferences for
list usage.

So if you're on a list that has people posting in formats you can't stand,
then speak up.  Consensus is the only path to society.
