The point is that if you're concerned about saving trees, you can open an
ASCII document IN ANY WORD PROCESSOR and simply format all the text
tighter, if you like.
 
Other data points:
The straight word document is 33% larger than ASCII (434 k vs 328 + k);
even if they were zipped, the ASCII zip is 109k, the Word 137k.
