I like auto-delete and wouldn't think of turning it off.  I own 8 lists,
several of them very busy, and several of them with lots of folks from
funky sites.  I just wish more sites ran mailers that would return messages
that would allow LISTSERV to autodelete.
 
However, you should understand I'm a crusty old hardass, too. I delete folks
with full mailboxes every day.  I am NOT going to sit and wait for your
full mailbox to bounce stuff for a week before I zap you.  I delete
'no such account' stuff immediately.  I delete 'invalid domain name' and
similar immediately.  Yes, name servers and such can be down.  But....
that is NOT MY PROBLEM....my problem is to deal with several hundred bounces
a day even with autodelete turned on and a quick trigger finger.  I came
back from a two week vacation and found over 7000 bounces in my mailbox, to
put it in perspective.
 
Sure, some folks get deleted 'too quickly', but that is also NOT MY PROBLEM.
I tell folks on my lists about six times a year that the ONLY reason I
EVER delete anyone is due to mailbounces of one sort or another.  Of course
I STILL get a message a day from some bozo who says "what did I do wrong
that you deleted me, not send enough messages?"      And so it goes....
