Hm--are you using LSMTP to handle your outgoing email?  This:

[. . .]
>-> XMRG FROM:<[log in to unmask]> VERSION=1
>500 Command unrecognized: "XMRG FROM:<[log in to unmask]>
>VERSION=1"
[. . .]

makes it appear that you are not.

LSMTP is required if you are doing Mail Merge jobs.  The reasons for
this are outlined in section 4.1.4 of the Developer's Guide.
