In his otherwise helpful message on sending commands to LISTSERV
Mike Ramundo included a sample subscription message, in the form
  SUBSCRIBE <listname> "J. Q. User"
 
Please do NOT place quotation marks around the personal name.  If you
do, problems will occur any time you (or anyone else) sends the command
  REVIEW <listname> BY NAME
 
The resulting output will file any name strings that begin with a
character other than an alphabetic character before the A; thus
the list output will be in the order:
    "J.Q.User"
    John Abbott
    Mary Roe
    Joseph X. User
