From this it sounds like you were successful.  If I were changing a
header and was certain I hadn't touched a particular line, yet got
a error saying that line was corrupt, I'ld try it one more time.
If I got the same error again I'ld either send for a new copy of
the header, as you did, or totally delete the line (and probably
the line above and below) and enter it myself as it should be, using
an editor I trusted for such things.  Sometimes you can spot such
glitches if you print the thing out on paper (doesn't print properly)
or look at it with a different editor/viewer.

*Having* to do it by entering the code would be rare, though could
happen (you've got a keyboard with a glitch and a particular key
always sends the wrong code, for example) but, to answer the question
you can intersperse regular typing and entering the characters via
code as you see fit.  It's just a different way of sending the same
impulse, which your keyboard is supposed to do for you, according to
how it is mapped.  Parts of the above I typed, parts I entered code.
