You're right, Brown is running VM.  However, Francoise is correct in
saying that we wouldn't have any fixes for 1.8b and the supported way to
fix this would be to upgrade to a current supported version and see if
the problem disappears.  Without more data it would be hard to say for
sure, but I do know there were some significant fixes to the DIGEST
functions from 1.8b to 1.8c.

FWIW 1.8b is not pre-L-Soft.  The first L-Soft LISTSERV release was 1.8a
in 1993.  The last Revised LISTSERV release was the venerable 1.7f :)
