Just NEVER throw out any old postings, because the message numbers will
change (at least they appear to change on VM).

SEARCH/GETPOST works as usual with 1.8c VM.

SEARCH is the only method. With the coming of the reverse index (and
maybe before?), the indices are not updated until required (by the next
SEARCH). The post number is not in the logs, only in the indices.

We like the following set of new features:

Top Ten new LISTSERV features for 1.8c (VM):

1. PROBE -- Large, active lists are too costly without it!

2. "SET listname MIME" -- MIME digests are a great new feature if your
subscribers read mail with a MIME-digest-enabled reader such as Pegasus
(Eudora does not appear to be capable yet).

3. Bottom banner is no longer repeated in digests.

4. "SET listname SUBJECTHDR" -- puts the listname in the mail subject
line for mostly brain-dead mail reader programs. Example:

Subject: [LSTOWN-L] fyi .. new features of LISTSERV

5. Digest and Index subscriptions are now counted in the "Your message
has been distributed to ..." message.

6. The fileid parts of a GET command may be separated with a period
instead of a blank. Example:

      GET LSTOWN-L.FILELIST

7. PW= in the list headers is now discouraged. Apparently LISTSERV
uses an internal mechanism to generate random passwords. list owners
use their personal password.

8. OK by any of the moderators -- The syntax is

      * Moderator=All,mod1, mod2, ...

Without "All", the moderators are used in round-robin fashion. With
"All", all moderators get a copy of each message for approval. Any
moderator may approve each message.

9. (this space for rent)

10. New SEARCH/GETPOST -- No more crummy "jcl", though I'd like to know
how to force the partial display of hits on or off.

One use of new SEARCH is to fetch the numbers of all posts since the
last tme you looked (assume highest # post seen is 1234, then use..

      search * in listname.1235-99999

Hope this helps,
wayne
