I think that reference.com offers a valuable service.  Having
archives on a WWW site is fine, if the user knows what mailing list's
(or newsgroup's)  archives he/she wants to search and where that
accompanying WWW is (if it exists).  However, often the user doesn't
know the name of the appropriate newsgroup or mailing list and needs
some kind of starting point.
