Having wiped out my list once because it was in NOLOCK and I forgot my
helpful mail program automatically adds a .sig line (which has my
address, which causes LISTSERV to think I am adding users on the fly,
which LISTSERV strongly advises not to do) I prefer to GET the header,
and let the list be locked. Since this is never for more than 5 minutes
it is not a problem. Note that LOCK simply means nobody can be added to
or deleted from the list, nor can they change options. Regular message
traffic is not affected at all.

I do keep a copy of the latest header on my local PC, as well as a
current REVIEW file, so I can restore all users in the event of some
stupid error... The backup you have in hand, will never be needed. The
backup you meant to do tomorrow was needed yesterday.

You can use the END command to tell LISTSERV to not read your .sig line
or you can be sure your sig starts with 2 -- (dash or hypen) marks.
However, I try to make a habit of turning OFF my .sig line for command
msgs, because it makes me reread and be sure that's the command I mean to
do.
