On one of my lists, they can post while on nomail.  The other is a moderated
list and no one can post directly to the list.  On the unmoderated list, and
past lists I have had, a lot of people who read my list and many other bird
lists on national sites that carry them reply often much too late when a
thread has run its course, or ignore admin statements that mail people would
pay attention to.

Many find it is much more efficient to read from a national site that
carries many lists they belong to.  I don't encourage nomail except for
periods when the subscriber will be away and their inbox may overflow.  I
still have people who will sign off rather than go nomail.

It has its pluses and its minuses.
