This problem would probably best be answered by a listowner who is also an
AOL subscriber.

We have a subscriber to A-PARENT-RUSS with an AOL address who wants to
remain anonymous on the list. We require that all subscribers provide at
least a real first and last name when they subscribe. We have
Confidential= Yes and Default-Options=CONCEAL, so there is no way that
anyone other than the owners should have access to the subscriber's name.

When this particular subscriber posted a message to the list last week,
the From: line of her message showed "Firstname Lastname
<[log in to unmask]>". She claims that she does not have her real name
entered in her AOL e-mail setup, and that LISTSERV must be picking this up
from the subscriber information. I suggested that she contact AOL's tech
support, which she did. They claimed that, when she is using AOL's
software to send the message, "This Information is *never* sent out by the
AOL e-mail program. There is no way for it to. Also there is no way for
it to be altered until it leaves AOL. The only possibility is that the
listserv itself is adding the info. In cases of standard mail software
there are configurable options for this info to be sent if you desire.
With AOL all info of this type is blocked for your security. (Also all
info from a ping or a finger on the internet is blocked so no-one can find
your real name by getting your E-mail address."

OK, so where is her real name coming from in the From: line? Is it
possible that LISTSERV somehow IS picking it up from the subscriber
information? It was my understanding that this was impossible. Can
anyone offer an explanation and/or any advice?

Best wishes,
