Is your list open subscription or limited (subscribe by owner)? If it is open subscription, then there is nothing to prevent a spammer from joining, doing a review of the list members, and then leaving the list. He then has a list of potential "fresh" email addresses to sell to those folks who make their money sending out spam. If your list has restricted membership, then it has some protection against this type of user - especially if you require some type of explanation from the new member before adding them to the list. This is probably the primary reason that people keep their member lists restricted and don't mind the occasional, "who has Joe's email address" types of posts.
