Don't know if this applies in your case, but... We had a similar phenomenon on a list that was set up to use topics. Someone posted a message without specifying a topic, and since no one was subscribed to the "OTHER" topic, LISTSERV dutifully sent the message to 0 recipients and nicely posted a copy in the archives.
