HTML can make is difficult for text readers to work. Not everyone has unlimited high speed connect time with no fees over their their monthly payment. HTML takes up a lot more space to say the same thing as plain text, and takes longer to download. Perhaps that isn't significant when only 1-2 messages a day are going out, but it adds up as the messages do. If you have archives HTML is going to fill them up much faster than plain text will.
