If you want to delve into this problem, be sure to wear a safety harness and protective gear.

In your sendmail.cf config file, it should contain a line:
O MaxRecipientsPerMessage=limit

In your sendmail.mc file, it looks like:

define(`confMAX_RCPTS_PER_MESSAGE', `limit')

Sendmail config files are often located in /etc/mail and MC files are in /etc/mail/cf/cf

After changing your sendmail.cf file, you have to restart sendmail or simply reboot the system.

Subject: Sendmail config problems

Hello list,

Trying to help our list admin here. It seems that when a message is being sent to a big size (several hundred+) the mail servers at the next hop sometimes throttle the connection. What shows on the maillog files is that the remote mail server returned a service unavailable.

Problem here is that listserv or sendmail are not queuing these and trying again, but instead a message gets send to in the format 'owner-list-l*username*@domain.com<http://domain.com>' but these are sent to remote mail servers who refuse them because the address is unknown.

So we seem to have two problems - one is that sendmail is not re-queuing the messages and trying again, and the other that the messages are resent to an unknown email address.

Here are some sample log files so you can get an idea:

Sep 30 14:42:05 listserv sendmail[23009]: s8UCVDur023009: from=<owner-mylist-l*user1**DOMAIN*[log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>>, size=57994, class=-30, nrcpts=1, msgid=<[log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>>, proto=ESMTP, daemon=MTA, relay=localhost [127.0.0.1]
Sep 30 14:42:05 listserv sendmail[10584]: s8UCVDur023009: to=<[log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>>, delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=esmtp, pri=231994, relay=mta.domain.edu<http://mta.domain.edu>. [10.0.0.10], dsn=5.0.0, stat=Service unavailable
Sep 30 14:42:05 listserv sendmail[10584]: s8UCVDur023009: s8UIg5bl010584: DSN: Service unavailable
Sep 30 14:42:05 listserv sendmail[10584]: s8UCVDur023009: done; delay=00:00:00,ntries=1

Sep 30 14:42:05 listserv sendmail[10584]: s8UIg5bl010584: to=<owner-mylist-l*user1**DOMAIN*[log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>>, delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=esmtp, pri=30000, relay=mta.domain.edu<http://mta.domain.edu>., dsn=5.7.0, stat=User unknown
Sep 30 14:42:05 listserv sendmail[10584]: s8UIg5bl010584: s8UIg5bm010584: return to sender: User unknown
Sep 30 14:42:05 listserv sendmail[10584]: s8UIg5bl010584: done; delay=00:00:00, ntries=1

All of our lists are in the format "[log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>" as are all of our email addresses. The MX records point to mta.domain.edu<http://mta.domain.edu>

Thanks in advance...
