I am hoping you can help me track down the case and solution for a problem I am having.
I have a ListServ with about 20 lists and about 2000 subscribers. Starting a few days ago, the ListServ starting sending thousands of PROBE1 and PROBE2 emails. Customers are receiving those emails and responding as directed, but they continue
to receive the message again, usually the next day. As far as I can tell, all subscribers to a list that has received a post in the past few days have received a probe email.
Do you know what can start a “probe storm” (that’s what I’m calling it) like this? It hasn’t ever happened in the many years the server has been running.
I have looked through all the log files, but nothing out of the ordinary seems to have happened to cause this. A few days ago, the LSMTP logs started including the following error messages:
LSMTP-E-DNS_INVDOMAIN
LSMTP-E-SMTP_NOIPADDR
WSAECONNABORTED
WSAECONNRESET
WSAETIMEDOUT
LSMTP-E-SMTP_OPENTMO
etc
(I included an actual log snippet at the bottom in case you want to see more detail)
Similar messages appear for every single attempt to send an e-mail, although some messages appear to be getting through to subscribers.
The LSMTP\spool folder has a few thousand e-mails in it (mostly probe emails) from the past couple of days. Is that folder supposed to clear out once messages are sent and archived? Should it contain less than a day’s worth of email, or
is several days normal?
Where else should I be looking for the cause of this problem? Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
