Search has been improved somewhat in 16.5, (for one thing, searches are a lot faster, particularly if you have HPO), but some words are still going to be so common in your archives that they just aren’t indexed.

The bottom line is that you have to narrow your search.

For instance, try searching for the word “send” on this list.  It fails because the word “send” is too common.  But searching for “send digest” (random choice on my part) does come up with 344 potential matches.  (Searching for “digest” by itself comes up with over 1200 potential matches.)  Searching for “send mail” fails but searching for “sendmail” produces nearly 1100 potential matches.  (And yeah, I realize “send mail” and “sendmail” probably aren’t the same search for most folks on this list 😊 )

Or try searching for “LISTSERV” , which is an overflow word on this list.  But if you search for something like “LISTSERV logging” you get 25 matches.  (“LISTSERV log file” fails for obvious reasons; on this list, those are all overflow words for this list.)

The same problem is going to exist on lists where specialty terms are used constantly in post after post.  Eventually those specialty terms will be considered overflow words.

The point is that there is no reason for LISTSERV to throw hundreds or thousands of entries back to you that contain words that occur repeatedly, in thousands of separate posts, because you’re not going to page through tens or hundreds of pages of search results to find what you’re really looking for.  Narrow the search and you will be more likely to find what you want a lot more quickly.

I’ll just add us to the list. Our archive searches have had issues along the same lines as Krista mentioned.

Subject: Search functionality with HPO 16.0

When we upgraded to 16.0 earlier this year we pretty much lost any decent capability to search our archives.  I see from the archives here, that at least one other person has noticed the same issue.  If a word is used too many times, it isn’t indexed at all, and we’re thrown an error as if someone searched for “the”.  The most active list we have, doesn’t have any archive searches coming up after 2015, when it does return results for one of those more common terms.

How many people are running into this problem?  Have you found a solution?

Lsoft can you please address this?
