I have decided to put the "Dear sir" issue on a vote. Apart from June's hysterical complaint, which I completely ignored (all the more so as the repla- cement greeting she suggested, 'Dear BITNETter', would most probably make ARPA fans *very* angry -- I know at least one ARPA guy who *hates* BITNET), a res- pectable number of *sensible* persons have presented a request for that gree- ting to be changed. I contemplated defining a global variable, 'GREETING', in LSV$PROF and changing the MAILFORM file to "'greeting',", but I think it's cheating :-) So let's put it on a vote. PLEASE VOTE VIA PRIVATE MAIL. Any vote sent to the list will be void :-) I suggest the following possibilities: (1) Keep 'Dear sir', and to the hell with'em!! ;-) (2) Use 'Dear sir or dear madam' (suggested by Jenny) (2bis) Same as (2), but IBM-ed: 'Dear Sir Or Dear Madam' (oops, c/Or/or/ :-) ) (3) 'Dear User' (a suggestion from David Bolen) -- Note: this one would make *me* angry. Sounds like 'Dear End User' to my hears... (4) 'Dear Networker' (from myself) (4bis) 'Dear Network fan' (from myself too -- actually I'm hesitating) (5) 'Dear person' (don't remember who suggested this one) (6) 'Hello' (don't remember either) (7) 'IAT8187 JOB 4531,NEWUSER PR=15 CL=S AWAITING GREETING(P)' (hee hee) (8) other? Please vote within a reasonable delay... Eric
