The LISTSERV automatic self-maintained database of lists is kept on many different nodes. The database is quite large and you can search it interactively. You can get a compressed list (one liners) with TELL LISTSERV AT somenode LIST GLOBAL (I think all the backbone listservs have the up-to-date one line per list info). I recently mentioned a file called LISTSOF LISTS (note the added S) on the NEW-LIST list we run. That is available for GET/AFD/and anonymous FTP from vm1.nodak.edu (LISTSERV@NDSUVM1). The LISTSOF LISTS file I mentioned is just a partial introduction to list searching - where to look, etc. It is one of those "gee - if I save this answer I can use it again" things rather than a well-planned or exhaustive tutorial. And it only focuses on lists of mailing lists - not lists in general (see the BITNET SERVERS file for more general server information). One unique service described in LISTSOF LISTS is how to search our copy of Richard Zellich's Interest Groups file using the LISTSERV database facilities... After all this if you still want a copy you can GET/AFD from LISTSERV@NDSUVM1 (eg. send the command GET LISTSOF LISTS ). I don't update the file too often since it is pretty introductory.
