Hi All! I've got a curious little problem here... Does LISTSERV rewrite posters' From: addresses according to where a recipient is? If it does, I think the UBVM LISTSERV may be referencing an outdated UUCP map entry for 'teraluna', and plugging in a now-nonexistent domain name. If LISTSERV can't do this, then I need to figure out whether 'rutgers' or 'pucc' are the culprit. Here's what I'm seeing. The following two headers are from two received copies of a message I sent to [log in to unmask] I have a test address subscribed to the list, under two different addresses; [log in to unmask] [log in to unmask] This first header was received on the copy of the message which was sent to (I'm guessing) [log in to unmask]: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From tct!myrddin!ubvm.bitnet!UUS-L Fri Mar 13 08:40:34 1992 remote from teraluna Received: by teraluna.UUCP (1.64/waf) via UUCP; Fri, 13 Mar 92 09:43:19 EST for test Received: by tct.com (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.5) id <[log in to unmask]>; Fri, 13 Mar 92 08:40 EST Received: by myrddin.sybus.com (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.3) id <[log in to unmask]>; Fri, 13 Mar 92 08:15 EST Received: by sybus.sybus.com (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.1) id <[log in to unmask]>; Fri, 13 Mar 92 08:14 EST Received: from uunet.uu.net (via LOCALHOST.UU.NET) by relay1.UU.NET with SMTP (5.61/UUNET-internet-primary) id AA14518; Fri, 13 Mar 92 08:15:10 -0500 Received: from rutgers.UUCP by uunet.uu.net with UUCP/RMAIL (queueing-rmail) id 081438.13302; Fri, 13 Mar 1992 08:14:38 EST Received: from princeton.UUCP by rutgers.edu (5.59/SMI4.0/RU1.4/3.08) with UUCP id AA02433; Fri, 13 Mar 92 07:16:18 EST Message-Id: <[log in to unmask]> Received: from PUCC.PRINCETON.EDU by pucc.PRINCETON.EDU (IBM VM SMTP V2R2) with BSMTP id 6504; Fri, 13 Mar 92 07:15:14 EST Received: from PUCC.BITNET by PUCC.PRINCETON.EDU (Mailer R2.08 PTF011) with BSMTP id 4797; Fri, 13 Mar 92 07:15:14 EST Date: Thu, 12 Mar 1992 23:58:17 EST Reply-To: Steve Traugott <[log in to unmask]> Sender: Unitarian Universalists <[log in to unmask]> From: Steve Traugott <[log in to unmask]> Subject: attempting to communicate X-To: [log in to unmask] To: Multiple recipients of list UUS-L <[log in to unmask]> ---------------------------------------------------------------------- See the 'teraluna.mlb.fl.us' domain name? This machine hasn't been registered in that domain since October '91. Is it possible LISTSERV is sending that out to all domain-named recipients? If so, some of my list members must be having an awfully hard time writing to me. Does anyone know for sure if LISTSERV actually does this kind of rewriting? If it's not LISTSERV, then it's got to be something at PUCC or Rutgers, since those are the only things that seem to be unique to this message... This second header was received on the copy of the message which was sent to (I'm guessing) [log in to unmask]: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From tct!myrddin!UBVM.cc.buffalo.edu!UUS-L Fri Mar 13 08:11:29 1992 remote from teraluna Received: by teraluna.UUCP (1.64/waf) via UUCP; Fri, 13 Mar 92 09:43:16 EST for test Received: by tct.com (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.5) id <[log in to unmask]>; Fri, 13 Mar 92 08:11 EST Received: by myrddin.sybus.com (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.3) id <[log in to unmask]>; Fri, 13 Mar 92 07:16 EST Received: by sybus.sybus.com (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.1) id <[log in to unmask]>; Fri, 13 Mar 92 07:15 EST Received: from UBVM.cc.buffalo.edu by relay1.UU.NET with SMTP (5.61/UUNET-internet-primary) id AA06926; Fri, 13 Mar 92 07:16:07 -0500 Message-Id: <[log in to unmask]> Received: from UBVM.BITNET by UBVM.cc.buffalo.edu (IBM VM SMTP V2R2) with BSMTP id 4375; Fri, 13 Mar 92 07:16:14 EST Received: from UBVM.BITNET by UBVM.BITNET (Mailer R2.08 PTF008) with BSMTP id 4101; Fri, 13 Mar 92 07:16:02 EST Date: Thu, 12 Mar 1992 23:58:17 EST Reply-To: Steve Traugott <[log in to unmask]> Sender: Unitarian Universalists <[log in to unmask]> From: Steve Traugott <[log in to unmask]> Subject: attempting to communicate X-To: [log in to unmask] To: Multiple recipients of list UUS-L <[log in to unmask]> ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No rewriting on that one; I'm guessing because either: (1) The destination had a bang path in it, so LISTSERV kept the bang-path From: format.(?) (2) This one didn't go through PUCC or Rutgers. Has anyone had anything like this happen, or know of anything else that might provide some insight? I've written to the postmasters at PUCC and Rutgers; PUCC denies the possibility and Rutgers hasn't answered. Steve
