If there's a slow TCP/IP link between me and the FTP server, that can take a while, leaving me to twiddle my thumbs unless I'm using a multi-tasking OS, which excludes CMS for now. FTP tends to be quick within campus and reasonably quick within the USA for those of us in the USA, but going across an ocean or other international border often makes FTP very slow due to line speeds.
