I have received a memo from my network services saying the following: "During a videoconference held among all major representatives of Texas Bitnet sites on Monday, 10/11/93, Rice University announced that they will be removing their machine from the Bitnet core backbone in April 1994. The effect of this action by Rice leaves all of Texas and parts of Mexico without a backbone attachment to Bitnet and therefore removes TTU [Texas Tech University] from that network. Furthermore, with the announced termination of backbone service by USC and Cornell in July, the entire future of Bitnet is extremely doubtful. There is not enough computational resources to continue LISTSERV traffic with the removal of these core nodes." Does the removal of bitnet mean that LISTSERVs can no longer function? Or does it simply mean that all addresses must now be in Internet format? Fred Kemp Texas Tech University Owner: MBU-L, WCENTER, ACW-L, AWR-L, BACW-L [log in to unmask]
