Dear Seniors I would need some commentaries and critics on the new FISH-ECOLOGY definition. The list is approachin 700 academic members from 34 countries. Recently there were two tumults in FISH-ECOLOGY: (a) A request for the participation of children and high school juniors which was responded by a "no-children in this network" by me. On the other hand SUNET/FISH-ECOLOGY created a list for knowledge transfer between children and marine scientists; (b) That thread created the conditions to start "suggesting, requiring and ordering" by some subscribers the imposition of political issues related to fisheries into the network. This time I was forced, to stop the tumult, to send a notice where it was stated that "members who do not address scientific topics in their posts would be deleted from the list". I was callled nazi, fascist ... etc. by some subscribers. I had to terminate the subscription of 8 individuals and take away "related topics" from the older FISH-ECOLOGY definition (Network on Fisheries ecology and related topics"). The new definition is enclosed below and I would like to know your views on whether there is too much force and other views. Thank you for your expertise, Aldo-Pier. ***************************************************************** FISH-ECOLOGY Network - SEARN - SUNET Network on Fisheries ecology for professionals ***************************************************************** FISH-ECOLOGY is an international computer conference for academic and other personnel involved in empirical and theoretical research and assesement issues related to Fisheries ecology and fish: All bio-geo-scientific topics, analytical tools and procedures related to Fisheries ecology and fish are covered by this network, particularly: Behavioural- evolutionary- paleo- theoretical- and community ecology, stock dynamics, assesement and management by applied mathematics, statistics and modelling, mathematical bioeconomics, applied oceanography and GIS, genetics, limnology, chemical ecology, etc. Also, related scientific public domain software is covered in this network. Membership is open to all interested parties. If you would like to discuss the political, social and anthropological aspects of fisheries, FISH-ECOLOGY is not the right forum. You may, however, monitor the traffic and call for advice from the expertise found in the network if necessary. FISH-ECOLOGY is supported by the Swedish University Network (SUNET) with Core Site at the Royal University of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm (Sweden). The administration of FISH-ECOLOGY is carried out remotely from the Engeenering Computer and Communications Center (CICEI), at Las Palmas University (ULPGC, Canary Islands). The network aims to stimulate scientific debate between senior and junior researchers and scientific advisors on an international and multidisciplinary basis, to exchange ideas, data and to put forward new approaches to fisheries ecological issues. FISH-ECOLOGY is approaching 700 members from 34 countries (April. 94) and highly valuable sources are represented in the network. Seniors are considered central figures in FISH-ECOLOGY because they have accumulated the necessary knowledge and experience to point out directions to follow in the research topics covered by the network. The FISH-ECOLOGY management would encourage Seniors to moderate discussions when these touch their field of expertise and to share their experience with junior researchers and less initiated members. Furthermore, well documented/informed posters are expected from Junior researchers and undergraduate students. The FISH-ECOLOGY management will terminate subscriptions of authors who DO NOT address in their posters any of the topics covered by this network. Messages sent to FISH-ECOLOGY should be of academic nature. Communications through FISH-ECOLOGY may be informal. However, the network _is for_ professional discussions which may enhance the productivity of members in their research, advice and studies. [...]
