I am wondering *flame on* just whose 'bright' idea it was to have confirmation of subscriptions? *flame off* Here's the real rub. For a neophyte who is just beginning to learn, sending the confirmation can be an arduous task. For a pro, NO PROBLEM. But my normal method of subscribing to lists is: sub xxx-l Bob Parks set xxx-l digest But with confirmation on, I have to 'reply' to the confirmation, I get the job output saying that I am not signed onto xxx-l so can not use set xxx-l digest. Then I get the subscription, then I send the set xxx-l digest again, and then get another message back. messages messages from me to me Without confirmation 1 2 With confirmation 3 6+ Supposing that say there are 4000 lists with say 5 new subscriptions per day, the 'confirm' results in an increased network load of 120,000 messages. Suppose that I am off by a factor of 100 - that's still 1,200 per day, or 370,000+ messages per year (at least for those who want digest which is what I recommend to all neophytes). If I am not off, that's 37,000,000 extra messages per year. Not only that but the standard message for confirmation makes some statements about high volume lists - standard message- blatant lie for most lists which have 100-300 people after 6 months with maybe 5-10 messages a day. A PLEA - turn this 'feature' off (or convince me with DATA that it was/is needed).
