The *real* problem is that there *IS NO TOP LEVEL* .bitnet domain.
Some sites have local mailer configurations that automagically reroute
mail for node.bitnet to a gateway, but this is *NOT* guaranteed at all
Internet sites.  In fact, your problem is probably that your local system's
re-routing of .bitnet mail got broken in some manner.
 
The machine in question is also known as 'bitnic.cren.net' - this *should*
work for all Internet mail.
