This  cleanup is  necessary  in order  to allow  a  smooth transition  to
LISTSERV-TCP/IP. When a BITNET user writes to a LISTSERV-TCP/IP site, his
address will be userid%nodeid.BITNET@gateway, where the gateway will vary
randomly depending  on how  the message got  routed that  particular day.
That  makes  it  next  to  impossible  for  the  users  to  manage  their
subscriptions. The  list owner has  to be  involved every time.  To solve
this  problem, LISTSERV  trashes the  gateway part  when it  recognizes a
BITNET address.
