Greetings, I have been asked by the Vice-President (Technological Services & Registrar) at York University to post this message as a follow-up to mail I sent to this list last week (or was it the week before? :-)) regarding the user who insisted on sending a chain letter via LISTSERV. The user in question was: [log in to unmask] For those of you, as listowners of LISTSERV mailing lists who have filtered this person out (which apparently some of you may have...:-)) I submit the following mail I received for your attention and for your discretionary action in whatever manner you deem appropriate. On a more jovial note (*wink*), like, this guy might be pretty cool now since he has been on ice a few times over by staff at York. I've X'd the relevant fields for delivery (To, From, etc.). --Cheers! Trish ps. jovial...I still need a vacation...NOT quite 'me'. ---- xxxx [log in to unmask] Jul 29 01:20:00 1995 xxxx: Mon, 24 Jul 1995 10:03:11 -0400 xxxx: Gene Denzel <[log in to unmask]> xxx Trish Forrest <[log in to unmask]> xxxxxxxx Prof. Robinson's situation I have been following the flow of email concerning Prof. Robinson. I have also spoken with the Computer Coordinator in his area (Business School). I think it is clear that what we have here is initially, ignorance of the implications of both chain letters and off-topic posting to news groups, followed by a rather incredible arrogance when challenged. That said, I believe that he now understands why people were so upset at his initial participation in the misguided "chain letter" about the French testing, and that he will not do this sort of thing in the future. I do wonder, then, if perhaps you could as a favour send a followup note to your fellow listowners, indicating just these facts. I understand that, as you said, most would listen to him if, in the future, he had been filtered out of their group and wanted to request reinstatement. However, even for one who was so outrageous originally, this seems a cumbersome bit of baggage to drag along from now on. I fully understand if you feel this would be inappropriate, but do ask that you seriously consider it. (The other source of the posting which I received myself, from a long time peace activist in the Math Department, was much more temperate when challenged, and agreed to look carefully at the Appropriate Use Statement on our WWW server. Of course, the original Japanese poster is obviously sorry for the trouble his efforts caused, and has tried to make amends since. I think we all have a lot of education to do as more and more of our colleagues find how incredibly poserful email is, without the full understanding of how it works, and the consequences of some sorts of actions.) -- ************** PLEASE NOTE AND USE THE NEW EMAIL ADDRESS ***************** [log in to unmask] Prof. Gene Denzel PHONE: 416-736-5440 Associate Vice-President FAX: 416-736-5444 (Technological Services & Registrar) York University 4700 Keele St North York, Ontario M3J 1P3
