-- [ From: Huy Vu * EMC.Ver #2.5.02 ] -- Correct me if I am wrong (or if someone already suggested it (I might have missed some posts)) because I've just jumped into this List stuff about 2 months ago, but I think there is a relatively (and you'll see why) simple solution to the owner's error logs. The solution would be to create another list (called Owner-List - OL for short). Where the list owner is the only subscriber(s) (hopefully no error messages from this list and no advertising <grin>) and is receiving all the posts/errors in a daily digest. In it, the list owner can set the maximum size of each post/error message to truncate those large error messages from their original lists. In the original lists just send all error messages to OL to digest or if you don't want to see any listserv stuff make OL an owner with the real owner as quiet (but of course this depends on your setup). Then, you still will have to wade thru the emails in digest like in the example of the person who originally brought this idea up, but you don't get those one line summaries. And if you don't like the idea of wading thru the digest for errors and such you can set the time when the emails are delivered so that hit you all at once (like a digest, but as separate "entities"), and they can even be truncated too. Okay, here's the relative part you've been waiting for. Creating another list requires another point ($$$$) which might be a relatively (there's that word again) inexpensive investment that I'm sure Lsoft (or whatever other mailing list company - I'm using Lsoft as an example because that's who I'm familiar with) wouldn't mind (I'm not connected in any way to Lsoft besides using Listserv). If (big if) you look at the cost of another point over the course of a year in the time you (hopefully) save it might look justifiable. Unfortunately, a lot of lists are run out of the pockets of the list owners . Of course, Lsoft could create a special max 3 or 5 subscriber point for $10 to people who have already paid for "regular" points. But this too would require more coding, probably not more that bunch of conditional here and there (sorry Eric) and unfortunately we are back to where we began. Another problem might be if you oversee multiple lists. Does it mean multiple points if you want to see a digest for each list? Possibly, unless you set up a contraption for each list (only if you're best friends with the mail administer) as a subtopic of the list. Then you would set up a bunch of mail aliases for you and the error to address(mail admin. old buddy) and then somehow add the subtopic's name to the subject depending on the aliases (not sure if possible but it involves your pal the mail admin). However, if you're going to go thru all this trouble you might as well try to find out how the original list owner's digest was created. I'm writing this because I see a lot of people asking for a feature that previously wasn't in demand (therefore it wasn't put in) due to the lack of the number of people using e-mail today versus 5 or 10 years ago. Yes, I would like to see a full featured (there's no need to be selective about error messages) list owners utility, but I would also like to see a GUI on this as well (I'm thinking of writing one - don't start another thread about this). I'm sure the people at Lsoft have considered putting this (as well as the addition of more error decoding) on the list for the next version of Listserv. However, like anything else these things take time (you don't want buggy software do you?), from deciding what it will entail to coding to debugging. But while you sit and wait the error messages still come in and you've just read my possible "solution"(hey it's relative) to it. Thanks for reading through this long post. Huy Vu
