YES!  As a descriptive linguist, I know that language change is not "bad,"
that languages reshape themselves to meet the changing needs of the speakers,
and that I should not feel as annoyed as I do when I hear "listserv" for
"list."  But I can't help it.  It drives me crazy, partially for the
reasons you've mentioned:  the confusion it can lead to when net newbies
think that "send this command to the listserv" means "send this command to
the list."
