When I set ADS-L to 'send=private' yesterday, I tested the >setting by sending a posting from one of my addresses that's not subscribed Oops, sorry, I meant Send= Editor with Editor= your-e-mail,(YOURLISTNAME) The effect is similar to Send=Private, but with the difference you noted (i.e., with Send=Private, only the attempting sender gets the bounce, while with Send=Editor the sender gets a message "Your message has been submitted to <XX> for approval" and the Editor gets what is technically an approval request but in practice, in this application, is a bounce). In essence, all members of your list are editors, so they can all send without further approval (i.e., intervention). For anyone who isn't on the list, the message is forwarded "for approval" to the first-listed Editor, which you would set to your own address. BTW, in addition to this security addition, I also recently changed all my lists to Subscription= Open,Confirm (i.e., addition of the "Confirm" option, which results in an e-mail to someone subscribing or unsubscribing requesting confirmation with a "random-looking" code). This virtually eliminates problems with nuisance subscriptions caused by forged addresses, since it is a lot harder to intercept e-mail destined for someone else than it is to forge e-mail to look like it came from someone else. Also, I set Validate= Yes which requires me to provide my password with "add" "del" "get" "set" and other commands, to reduce greatly the likelihood of someone forging a listowner address to do mischief, and Review= Owner to prevent people from creating junk-mail lists from "review" commands and in general increasing the sense of privacy for list members. These restrictions have proven to have negligible negative effect compared to the benefits and increased sense of security, and I would recommend that all listowners consider adopting them for lists that are nominally "open." To summarize: Send= Editor Editor= your-e-mail,(YOURLISTNAME) Subscription= Open,Confirm Validate= Yes Review= Owner Shahrukh Merchant
