I believe >>>(but can't quote RFCs) that e-mail does not usually have line-lengths >>>greater than 80 positions. Some mail tools and/or service providers insert hard returns (line feed and/or carriage return), others do not. I've received email with over 20,000 characters and no line break... the assumption is that the receiver wants the msg to wrap at their terminal width, not that of the sender. I manually wrap lines at around 70 characters, which is really ugly for those using proportional-spacing fonts. It works well with fixed-pitch fonts like courier, which is the default on most printers. Line length has nothing to do with listserv, but it's a constant source of irritation for both sides of the fence (to wrap, or not to wrap, THAT is the question).
