If you want to read the flamewar between advocates of just a newsgroup, a gated newsgroup, and just a mailing list, search dejanews for the newsgroups bit.listserv.lawsch-l with subjects containing "RFD" or "CFV". Bottom line- there are people who prefer Usenet, and there are people who prefer mail. If you want maximum participation in your group, then offering both is the way to go...
