They're different (yet share certain attributes in common). If I did not have to put up with more spam, I would much prefer to read public list mail via Usenet news servers. Of course that is due in part to our particular news and POP mail server configs, as well as my clients. Before the int'l spam conspiracy, reading LISTSERV distribution lists via the BIT.LISTSERV.listname hierarchy was my preferred Modus Operandi.
