Thanks All, for the advices. In the end I could do without the style sheet, and didn't need to go back to my administrator. I'm happy now, with control over backgrounds by the usual if tedious strategem of inserting a <body background=<path>/xxx.gif> right after the IMS and before the <titles>'s on the pages I'm interesting in making non-white.
