Unfortuntely, there does seem to be an addition. I sent a test message to myself via a plain email address and via a list. Here are the subject lines from each:
List:
To: [listname]@umr.edu
Subject: This is a test message. Ignore it.
Plain address:
To: [plain addy]@umr.edu
Subject: This is a test message. Ignore it.
There are actually several spaces prepended, it would seem.
