Not so. The special-action addresses
[log in to unmask][log in to unmask]
have been around since Ver 1.8d as I recall (Mar 1998?). These addresses go
directly to LISTSERV and are correctly interpreted as sub/unsub commands and
processed without human intervention. They do not go to the non-quiet List
Owner(s).

Yes, this form of command has worked since 1986, but the other form works
equally well.
