Not necessarily. If a list has 'private' (limited to subscribers) message
archives then a login (userID+password) is needed to read those messages. If
a list how no archives at all, or public archives then this is not a problem.

Not much I suspect. Most users aren't even aware of the possibility of
changing their subscriber options, other than sub/unsub.

No. But depending on list and/or server configuration LISTSERV may need to
send them an OK/confirmation request email to which they can click a link or
reply to the email in order to confirm the unsubscribe request.
