To add to the complexity - there are a couple of other options besides DIGEST and NODIGEST (aka MAIL) - one can also receive notifications just of message subjects that are being discussed: NOHTML INDEX and HTML INDEX. The the emails received from the ListServ do not contain the text of the messages - they just provide links to the full messages in the list's archives.
I think the INDEX setting is not much used, but we do have an adventurous few that do use it. When I sent:
> Query listname WITH index FOR *@*
13 subscription addresses were returned.
When I sent:
> Query prostate WITH index nomail FOR *@*
An additional 8 addresses were returned, for a total of 21. (We have about 1230 subscribers)
